Practice Self-Care

Taking care of your physical and mental health is obviously beneficial in general, but it is particularly necessary for building and sustaining resilience. Challenging and traumatic events illicit stress which affects us physically, mentally, and emotionally. By keeping your body healthy through proper nutrition, hydration, sleep, and regular exercise, you strengthen your ability to adapt to stress and reduce the levels of anxiety and depression.

Mindfulness practices such as meditation, journaling, and yoga can help you build an overall sense of positivity that you can rely on during times that call for strength and resilience. It’s difficult to maintain a positive attitude when facing life’s challenges.  An optimistic outlook empowers you to expect that good things will happen to you. Regularly taking note of and acknowledging positive things and people in your life that you’re grateful for is one of the best ways to build a reservoir of hope to support you. Rather than masking emotional pain with drugs or alcohol, focus on maintaining healthy habits that will support the reduction of stress-related physical and emotional symptoms.
